College Baseball Bats

Most college baseball bats are made from aluminum. They are lighter and designed to increase bat speed. They are stronger than wood bats. A variety of metals are added to the aluminum to make it stronger and more durable.

Major manufacturers are Easton, Worth, Louisville Slugger, Rawlings, De Marini and Nike.

The standard alloy is 7046, which is used to make lower priced bats. The mid range alloy is 7050, which has more copper and magnesium added to aluminum. A stronger and more expensive alloy is 7055.

Graphite and titanium baseball bats are stronger and lighter than high grade aluminum.

Wood bats are not very popular in college baseball. Major Leagues require wood bats. They are made from ash, maple or bamboo. They are less expensive, but are not as durable as aluminum bats.

A player's height, weight and strength determine the bat weight. College players who are 66 to 68 inches tall should generally use models weighing 27 to 28 ounces. Taller players should use bats weighing 30 to 33 ounces.

College bats are usually 32 to 36 inches long. The barrel can be 2 1/2, 2 5/8 or 2 9/16 inches in diameter. Longer and wider barrels provide a larger sweet spot. The taper on bats is 31/32 of an inch. The grip can be leather, synthetic leather or rubber. Leather grips usually provide the best and a more comfortable grip.
